PRESERVE FAMILIES FIRST

For over  100 years, ships delivered sugar cane from as far away as India to the Domino Sugar plant (originally American Sugar Refining Company) on the East River. In the massive factory buildings workers processed the cane into granulated sugar and packaged it for distribution. The Brooklyn plant was one of the largest refineries in the world, and by 1870 more than half of the sugar consumed in the entire country was refined here.

Thousands of Brooklynites worked there and many settled in nearby Williamsburg and Greenpoint, shaping the character of those neighborhoods. It was a terrible blow to Brooklyn in 2004 when sugar processing ceased. While Domino is gone, they left behind  red brick buildings.  Now these people who suffered and worked under many years of horrible working environment can now benefit from this building as they never could before.  There is design that will bring REAL affordable housing to this site and real jobs paying better then Domino Sugar ever did in the past.  Let us remember the true history of Domino!!! A company that took advantage of the people.  In the end PEOPLE ARE WHAT TRULY MATTER!! NOT BRICK AND STONE BUT FLESH AND BLOOD.  Let's support building something that can finally; truly give back to Southside Brooklyn.  Let's build towers that can have working families living with the rich, a true development that excepts all people.
